Broken or chipped tooth
Bring any pieces you have. Depending on the break we can repair the tooth with bonding, a crown, or an onlay. Sharp edges and exposed nerves get handled the same visit.
Knocked-out tooth
Time matters most here. Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root, rinse it gently, and keep it in milk or in your cheek while you call us. A tooth replanted quickly has a real chance of surviving.
Lost filling or crown
Not usually painful, but the tooth underneath is exposed and vulnerable. We can often re-cement a crown or place a new restoration in one visit.
Abscess or swelling
An abscess is a pocket of infection that will not clear up on its own. We drain the infection, treat the source, and prescribe medication where needed. Swelling with fever needs same-day attention.

What to do before you get to our office

Knocked-out tooth
Pick it up by the crown. Rinse gently with water, no scrubbing. Try to place it back in the socket; if that is not possible, keep it in milk or tucked inside your cheek. Call us immediately.
Broken tooth
Rinse your mouth with warm water. Save any pieces. Use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek for the swelling. Cover a sharp edge with sugar-free gum or dental wax so it does not cut your tongue.
Severe toothache
Rinse with warm salt water and floss gently to rule out trapped food. Take over-the-counter pain medication as directed on the label. Do not put aspirin directly on the gum, it burns the tissue.
Swelling or abscess
Rinse with warm salt water several times a day and use a cold compress outside the cheek. Do not try to drain it yourself. Call us the same day.
Lost crown or filling
Keep the crown. Clear dental cement or denture adhesive from the pharmacy can hold it temporarily. Never use household glue.
